Mindfulness

What is Mindfulness ?

Mindfulness is a form of secular meditation based on attention, experience, and observation of the present moment without judgment.

When it comes to sleep, we all have different needs. Stress, personal or professional annoyances can prevent us from getting a restful sleep. The practice of mindfulness allows us to understand and better manage our reactions to stressful situations, which allows us to :

  • Reduce anxiety and mental ruminations
  • Prevent and reduce reactions to stressful thoughts or events
  • Learn to calm insomnia
  • Learn to welcome and regulate emotions
  • Help in the management of chronic pain

What is the MBSR program ?

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program was developed over 50 years ago by Professor Jon Kabat Zinn, Ph.D., and the team at the University of Massachusetts Department of Medicine.

It is a therapeutic approach with a limited number of sessions (8 weekly sessions of 2h30) designed to relieve the pain and stress of patients. The 8-week MBSR cycle is an education in self-help and a structured meditation training whose benefits are now validated by science and are the subject of numerous scientific studies highlighting its long-term benefits on the repercussions of stress and anxiety states.

The MBSR program is a training in mindfulness meditation practices that allows for a better understanding of how stress and its associated autopilot mechanisms work.

Mindfulness for which sleep disorders ?

Mindfulness is the treatment for patients suffering from insomnia without comorbidity. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated as it :

  • Significantly decreases intra-sleep awakening time (nighttime awakenings)
  • Reduces sleep latency and total wake-up time (time to fall asleep).
  • Increases total sleep time and quality of sleep
  • Decreases anxiety and depressive symptoms, ruminations, and negative affect.

How does the mindfulness program work ?

The program takes place over 8 weeks with a weekly session of 2h30.

The program includes formal mindfulness practices such as bodyscan, sitting meditation, mindful movements, and informal practices to integrate into one’s daily life.

It is important to note that mindfulness should not replace medical treatments for insomnia, but rather be used as a complement to enhance the effectiveness of existing treatments.
