Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
What is CBT-I ?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is particularly indicated for patients with chronic insomnia with no comorbidity, i.e. not tied to another pathology. CBT-I has been used for over 30 years, and its effectiveness has been clearly demonstrated by numerous studies.
It relies on a highly structured therapeutic approach with a limited number of sessions (usually 5 to 8 one-hour sessions).
Components of CBT-I
- Education : we review the various aspects of insomnia with the patient: development of insomnia, functioning of “normal” sleep, good sleep hygiene…
- Behaviour : we offer not only to change bad habits and establish strict sleep schedules, but also to shorten the overall time spent in bed.
- Cognition : we do cognitive work with the patient on their existing thoughts and beliefs; the goal is to reduce sleep-related anxiety and the consequences of insomnia.

How does the therapy work ?
At Cenas, we use a protocol consisting of 7 individual sessions. During the treatment, we focus on alleviating the various factors that perpetuate insomnia and help patients increase their ability and autonomy in managing their sleep disorders. This treatment requires motivation on the part of the patient as well as proactive involvement in the healing process.
