Daytime tests

These tests measure the patient’s tendency to fall asleep or, conversely, their ability to resist falling asleep, by placing them in standardized conditions (no noise, no light, comfortable temperature). There are two types of daytime tests: the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and the maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT).

Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)

  • Measures the severity of daytime sleepiness. The test is repeated five times during the day at two-hour intervals. The patient lies down in bed and is instructed to try to fall asleep. Signs of falling asleep during REM sleep (dreaming) may indicate the presence of narcolepsy.

Maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT)

  • Performed under the same conditions as the MSLT, but with the patient seated. This test measures the patient's ability to resist drowsiness. The MWT is repeated four times during the day at two-hour intervals. The patient is instructed to resist sleep.
